1. What attracts you to poetry, and how do you feel it provides a unique way to express emotions and ideas?
Poetry for me is a way of expressing myself. Silence they say is a virtue, but when it gets too much the only way to release emotional turmoil is through a poetic verse.
2. Can you share the inspiration behind the themes of your poems, and how this influences their tone and structure?
I always say, if I have to write I either need to be madly in love or deeply heartbroken.
3. Poetry often allows readers to interpret it personally. How do you balance conveying your intended meaning while leaving space for individual interpretation?
Yes, when it comes to poetry, there are never 2 similar thought, but when I write I try to be as clearly cryptic as I can be so you come very close to what I am trying to say – although you will always have another experience whilst reading it and it is wonderful to know that you connect to the experience.
4. How do you approach the musicality and rhythm of your language, and how does it enhance the reader’s experience?
I think it is a very common factor with all writers where sometimes, you’re just sitting there and all of a sudden you’re writing. Its not a conscious effort to sit down and write. For me, it could be a moment, someone’s conversation or a fragment of a memory that pulls me into another world or thought, rhymes and emotions – I hope I make sense to you..
5. Many poets draw from personal experiences. How does your own journey shape the themes and imagery in your work?
Oh yes, all of my work is through personal experiences. I have even written it in one of my pieces – ‘It’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all!’ I always say I have a wonderfully beautiful life, and all that happens are the regular ups and downs that make me realize that I’m alive. Feeling extreme emotion is one of my fortes, and being able to write about it is a gift I’ll always be grateful for.
6. How do you use poetry to reflect on or comment about the world around you?
When words are not enough, everyone has a different form of communication. Some isolate, some abuse, some are violent – for me, it’s the soothing effect of rhymes and a story. If you read my poetry, you will see my life through my eyes – I always try to keep it very relatable. Sometimes it’s cryptic and confusing, but often you will see the poems unfold as stories before your eyes. That’s always my aim. When I read my work back, I want to be taken back to that moment in time. Can you see me standing at my door, red-faced, tears rolling down my cheeks, hoping that the pain will stop? Or wandering in an unknown city, completely lost, trying to figure out my next meal! These are my reflections – mirrors of my existence through poetry and a little story!
7. Can you describe any writing rituals or practices that help cultivate your creativity and refine your craft as a poet?
Like I said earlier, it’s that moment in time that just clicks. Being in love or heartbroken fuels my creativity. Back before mobile phones existed, a pencil was my best friend. Not a pen – a pencil. There’s something about the feel of a dark, sharp pencil on a blank sheet of paper. Maybe that’s how I feel – my life is a blank slate and here I am, bringing colour into it, even if it is just black and white.
