From viral posts warning against certain oils to trends labeling utensils as harmful, people are increasingly confused about what to eat and how to live healthily. Dietitian Nidhi Sawhney, founder of Nutriadvice, is on a mission to clear the air with simple, practical tips for a sustainable and guilt-free lifestyle.

Sawhney emphasizes that the study of nutrition is indeed complex, but the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle are not. She believes in empowering individuals with a balanced approach rather than instilling fear or confusion.

  1. Stop Labeling Foods as “Good” or “Bad”Every food has its place and potential benefits. Labelling foods can lead to guilt when one occasionally indulges. Instead, accept all foods in moderation and focus on the bigger picture.
  2. Food Is Not a Reward or Punishment
    Eating shouldn’t be emotional compensation—whether it’s stress eating or celebrating with overindulgence. Likewise, don’t punish yourself with detoxes or strict regimens because you “overate” the previous day. Consistency matters more than isolated meals.
  3. Personalization Is Key
    Following someone else’s diet is a mistake. Each individual has unique body requirements, health conditions, and lifestyles. Nutrition should always be personalized and tailored.
  4. Home-Cooked Meals Win Every Time
    No matter how “healthy” a packaged or restaurant meal claims to be, home-cooked food, with known ingredients and hygiene, is always a better choice.
  5. Carbohydrates Are Not the Enemy
    Demonizing carbs is unnecessary. They are an essential component of a balanced diet. The secret lies in moderation and variety.
  6. The Balanced Plate Formula
    For a well-rounded meal, aim for:

    • 1/4 plate carbohydrates
    • 1/4 plate proteins
    • 1/2 plate vegetables (cooked or raw salad)
  7. The Oil Debate: Quantity Over Type
    Rather than obsessing over which oil to use—cold-pressed or refined—focus on the quantity used. Excess of any oil can be detrimental to health.
  8. Food Should Bring Joy, Not Stress
    Eating should be a happy experience. Strive to eat healthy 90% of the time, but allow yourself the remaining 10% to enjoy your favorite treats—guilt-free.
  9. Don’t Let Social Media Dictate Your Diet
    With endless updates aimed at creating fear and confusion, it’s crucial to trust your instincts and listen to your body. Stay informed, not intimidated.
  10. No Need for Detoxes or Superfoods
    Daily nutrition doesn’t require extreme measures. Superfoods and detox routines aren’t necessary if you’re following a consistent, balanced, and healthy lifestyle.

Dietitian Nidhi Sawhney’s message is clear: nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. Instead of chasing trends, adopt simple, mindful, and consistent eating habits that prioritize overall well-being over perfection.
