In a world where balancing work and family life can be a challenge, many parents are finding new ways to carve out careers that give them the flexibility to be there for their children while also pursuing their passions. For one teacher, the decision to shift from a traditional classroom role to becoming an entrepreneur came out of necessity and a desire to create a more balanced lifestyle.
A Passion for Teaching Meets a New Opportunity
For Moumita Sen, teaching had always been a calling. With years of experience in the classroom, she found immense joy in helping students learn, grow, and reach their potential. However, when she became a mother, Moumita’s priorities began to shift. The long hours spent outside the home, the never-ending lesson planning, and the demands of school administration all started to take a toll, both on her personal life and her health.
Like many parents, Moumita wanted to be there for her children. She didn’t want to miss out on their formative years, and yet, she also knew she couldn’t sacrifice her career and personal ambitions altogether. She began to look for a way to combine her skills as an educator with the flexibility that would allow her to be a present and active parent.
The Leap Into Content Creation
The answer came in the form of content creation. In 2015 Moumita decided to take the plunge into the world of creating content. She always had an appetite for building content .
Her first step was creating a blog where she could capture events, lives and various spheres of lifestyle. Moumita’s content creation journey was not an overnight success. It took time to build a following, refine her products, and learn the nuances of digital marketing. However, with each passing month, she began to see her audience grow.
Creating a Flexible, Scalable Business Model
However Moumita always knew only content creation cannot be the only avenue to success. In search of a more stable career, she joined as a brand manager of a beauty brand. Since the brand offered her flexible working hours, she was partially able to give time to her little one as well. She also got a chance to represent her organization internationally in one of the biggest global cosmetic exhibitions, Cosmoprof held in Hong Kong. But amidst all the success, there were days when her child would adamantly refuse to be in the daycare. And then suddenly it hit Moumita that she needs to opt out of her job if she wants to give quality time to her child.
With absolutely no experience of pitching clients, Moumita started to reach out to brands. Out of the hundred mail threads that she prepared, probably one or two she used to get a response from. But that didn’t stop her from pursuing. From constant referrals from brands she has worked for, Social Connoisseurs Branding Solutions soon started evolving.
One of the key factors that contributed to Moumita’s success was her ability to scale her business while maintaining flexibility. As an entrepreneur, Moumita was able to set her own hours, which meant she could work when her children were napping or after they had gone to bed. This allowed her to balance her professional goals with her responsibilities as a mother.
Moreover, Moumita soon realized that she could diversify her income streams. What started as a small blog, gradually expanded its wings to other diverse fields of digital marketing. Social Connoisseurs Branding Solutions was thus formed as a result of her sleepless nights and uninterrupted creative labour.
“I have seen umpteen number of sunrises as I used to work all night on my client articles after sending my child off to sleep.” As her business grew, she hired a small team of like-minded people to help with content creation and administrative tasks, further reducing the pressure on her.
Embracing Challenges and Growth
Becoming an entrepreneur came with its own set of challenges, but Moumita was driven by her need to be there for her children while still pursuing her passion for her social media agency. One of the toughest hurdles was learning how to reach out to potential brands and build an agency from scratch. “I had no experience in marketing or running a business,” Moumita admits, “but I quickly learned the importance of building a strong agency creating valuable content, and listening to the needs of my brands.”
She also faced the inevitable doubts that come with leaving a stable career. The decision to transition from teaching in a classroom, from a stable corporate job to working from home was a leap of faith, and it wasn’t always easy. There were moments of self-doubt, especially when the sales didn’t come as quickly as she hoped, or when technical issues arose. However, Moumita took each challenge as a learning opportunity.
“I realized that as an entrepreneur, I had to wear many hats—teacher, marketer, content creator, and business owner. But that flexibility and control over my time were worth it,” she says.
The focus of Moumita’s journey was to create a platform for mothers who had to restrict their career for motherhood. She wanted that motherhood should never be a barrier to someone’s dreams.
Lessons Learned
Reflecting on her journey, Moumita is proud of the path she has taken. “It hasn’t been easy, but the flexibility it offers has allowed me to be there for my children. I get to work on something I’m passionate about, and at the same time, I can be present for all the little moments that matter most.
Throughout this entire journey, it was Moumita’s husband’s unwavering support that helped her to walk through the difficult phases of agency life. In 2024, Anirban, Moumita’s husband quit his job to be a part of this beautiful entrepreneurial journey.
Moumita’s journey from teacher to entrepreneur is a story of resilience, adaptability, and the power of following one’s passion. By turning her love for teaching into a content-driven business, she found a way to balance her professional and family life, all while helping others in the process. As she continues to grow her business and inspire those around her, Moumita’s story stands as a testament to the idea that with creativity, determination, and a clear vision, anyone can turn a passion into a thriving, flexible business that makes a lasting impact.
