The world, which was purportedly just on the cusp of eliminating extreme poverty and reducing inequalities, has somehow now been plunged by the pandemic into unprecedented levels of extreme poverty and inequality. The long held-up global value chain and current market system began disintegrating and collapsing when borders closed, leading to acute shortages of food, medical goods and other necessities. The initial excitement and win-win sentiment around globalization have long disappeared, even prior to the pandemic, as it fails to bring the broad improvements in life for the large majority of the world’s population that it supposedly would.
This leaves us to scrutinize much of the basic assumptions and premises on which our economic, political and social system were built upon. Was the world truly on the cusp of eliminating inequalities between and within countries, between men and women, and between dominant and marginalized racial and ethnic groups as often purported by those that design our economic rules and policies? Is our current economy system of scale and growth truly sustainable and the only way to go, when it cannot withstand a pandemic or even a climate crisis. The Global Feminist Convening brought together approximately feminists primarily from the global Majority, with a third of those rooted in the MENA(Middle East and North Africa)region. Working across economic and climate justice, from grassroots and international organizations, participants were invited from across a range of backgrounds and lived experiences.

The event, held on June 30, 2025, was organized by the MENAFem Movement for Economic Development and Ecological Justice, along with other organizations like , Bretton Woods Project, and CESR. The Roadmap was developed by MENA and Global South feminists during a recent Global Feminist Convening and serves as a tool for collective advocacy.
Building constituency for structural feminist analysis :
Infusing both economic and climate policy debates with a decolonial feminist lens is politically imperative to advance global and regional struggles towards rights and justice. To create space for strategizing, foster global linkages, and set a foundation for advocacy infused by global South feminist analysis, particularly from the MENA region, a group of feminist and allied organizations convened this gathering in Rabat, Morocco, immediately following a three-day feminist economics school led by MENAFem. Grounded in community and building collective power to counter neoliberal, extractivist, white supremacist and patriarchal hegemony, the convening identified steps to advance feminist alternatives that center care for people and planet.Together the participants worked towards a conceptual framing to guide collective advocacy through major policy spaces in 2025, particularly the Fourth Conference on Financing for Development (FfDIV) and the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) of the UNFCCC. Fifty participants (two thirds of which were from Southwest Asia and the African continent) engaged in deep strategy work and systemic analysis, across Arabic and English, towards collective visioning of feminist and decolonial alternatives to our current economic order. This virtual side event presented the Rabat Roadmap: The outcome of a global feminist convening in Rabat, Morocco, in May 2025. Guided by the expertise and analysis of feminists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and the global South more broadly, this document is intended as a basis for collective advocacy, in the context of the current geopolitical context of increasing militarism, fascism and anti-rights narratives and policies, as well as the continued erosion of multilateralism. On the sidelines of the Fourth Conference on Financing for Development (FfDIV), the event delved into FfD policy arenas including tax, debt, and global economic governance, and make links to the climate justice agenda and the upcoming 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) of the UNFCCC. Grounding in solidarity to counter neoliberal, extractivist, white supremacist and patriarchal hegemony, this event will explore ways to advance feminist alternatives that center care for people and planet. The event was organized by several organisations such as MENAFem, Bretton Woods Project, CESR, Akina Mama wa Afrika, Christian Aid, Eurodad, and GADN.It was a side event within the broader context of the FfD4 conference, which aimed to challenge austerity, debt dependency, and economic structures that extract from the Global South. The event was part of a larger mobilization effort, including global days of action from June 27-29, 2025, demanding debt cancellation, economic and climate justice, and systemic change.
